076 Radiant Black Rebuild
The next era of Radiant Black! Plus, NYCC recap! NO/ONE Classified Edition! And our surprise Monday livestream!
Hey everyone! Happy Friday!
Kyle here, coming to you from my desk in Los Angeles, which, I’ve been at a lot less recently, thanks to some awesome traveling. First up was New York for a wonderful NYCC. We had a blast at this year’s show— thanks to everyone who came to our panels and came by our tables. To all our new subscribers, welcome! It was lovely to meet you (or see you again) at the show. Welcome to our little group!
And don’t worry, if you missed the convention, I’ll hit a few things about Radiant Black, NO/ONE and Rogue Sun today. And at the end of the post, I’m including a bunch of pictures from the weekend.
Pretty much immediately after NYCC, I hopped on a plane to Melbourne, Australia for a family wedding. I managed to pop into the awesome All Star Comics in Melbourne and signed a few books, including some blacklight remarques in the Radiant Black Massive Edition hardcovers. So, if you’re reading this from Melbourne, definitely pop in and see if there are any left!
It was a great time in one of my favorite places with wonderful people— except for the waking up extra early to watch the Bears get humiliated. Twice. But other than that, i
But! I’m back and we’re back and we’ve got a bunch of cool stuff coming up to talk about today, including a big special livestream this Monday, November 18.
NO/ONE: Under The Helmet, A Live Behind-The-Scenes Conversation
Join Brian Buccellato, Michael Busuttil and myself this Monday night at 6pm PST for a live discussion and breakdown of NO/ONE, our big multimedia-driven superhero murder mystery. And, joining us for the hour will be a group of our ultra talented cast members from the WHO IS NO/ONE audio series.
TODD STASHWICK (Star Trek: Picard), LOREN LESTER (Batman: The Animated Series), YURI LOWENTHAL (Insomniac’s Spider-Man), TARA PLATT (Naruto), ADAM McARTHUR (Jujutsu Kaisen), and WALTER JONES (Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers) will be joining us to talk about the process of bringing characters to life in different formats, and the experience of working on an outside-the-box superhero mystery.
For the stream itself, we’ll be simulcasting to the Black Market YouTube as well as Image Comics’ YouTube.
This should be a really fun conversation and discussion and we’ll be taking questions!
And! We’ll be dropping our NO/ONE Confidential Edition live on the stream, where we’ll also be giving away three copies for the best questions.
NO/ONE Classified Edition
Our copies of the NO/ONE TPB officially arrived last week and I’m thrilled to report that it’s everything I was hoping for.
For anyone who missed my breakdown of the TPB in an earlier newsletter, here’s a little bit about what exactly this book contains. TLDR, we went all out.
Kyle on the NO/ONE trade paperback:
In addition to dozens of remastered pages from Geraldo and Mark, Michael Busuttil has also gone above and beyond in working to incorporate all of the multimedia storytelling elements that Brian and I have built as a part of this one-of-a-kind murder-mystery. These include all of our in-universe newspaper articles that crime reporter Peter Nickeas, formerly of The Chicago Tribune and CNN, has helped us with as well as some expanded coverage from Danielle Gaines’ controversial Edge News.
We’re also incorporating NO/ONE’s website where— if you have the right command code (hint hint, it’s in the article right above ;) — you can access not only all of the doxxing files that NO/ONE releases throughout the story, but also all sorts of additional audio clips, unreal engine videos (!) and more.
Michael’s laid out a nice double page spread at the front of the book to showcase a collage of files that are accessible via 00110000.info:
Now, in case you’re worried about being overloaded by reading material, we’ve designed the back matter to accentuate the pieces that are most important to the story— those articles are printed in the book itself. But if you want the full picture of events and details on the world, then we have more pieces that are accessible on The Pittsburgh Ledger’s branded coverage website, The Drop. Those articles are collected in the book by way of QR codes.
And then, of course, we’re also incorporating every episode of the WHO IS NO/ONE podcast that we made as a scripted audio series, starring Rachael Leigh Cook (She’s All That), PATTON OSWALT (Netflix’s The Sandman), TODD STASHWICK (Star Trek: Picard), YURI LOWENTHAL (Insomniac’s Spider-Man), LOREN LESTER (Batman: The Animated Series), ADAM McARTHUR (Jujutsu Kaisen) and a host of others.
All of the above are placed where they slot in the story and have dates on them, so you can experience everything in the intended order!
The book printed beautifully, the QR codes work incredibly well, and having gone through this whole story myself, it’s a really, really unique experience. Brian, Geraldo the team and I are all thrilled with the finished product.
And as if the above isn’t cool enough, we’ve also made an even more special edition.
The Classified Edition, priced at $39.99, comes with a signed and numbered bookplate— by myself and Brian Buccellato— is limited to 100 copies (sans APs), and features an exclusive cover by Goni Montes, designed by Michael with a spot gloss effect in place of the title. Check out the effect— it’s incredibly cool:
The Classified Edition also comes with an additional 12 page book that gives a look at some of the behind the scenes on the project, including photos, breakdowns, and commentary.
Like I said, we’ll be dropping this one on our shop during our Monday night livestream. Bring some good questions for your shot at getting a free copy!
Radiant Black Rebuild
February solicits dropped today, which means we can finally start talking about the future of Radiant Black!
Radiant Black Rebuild, which is what we’ve started calling it internally, is our “what comes next?” This is the next era of the book and we’re designing issue 31 to be a big jumping on point.
Marshall enters a new era as the permanent RB, coming out of the Catalyst War and the fan vote. And, having seen a timeline where everything went wrong, he’s determined to make the most of his second chance and become a hero that people can be proud of.
He’s moved to the city, found an apartment and a roommate and is working to help Chicago recover from the robot invasion—but he’s not the only player coming out of the war with something to prove. As futuristic weapons and blame spread faster than recovery efforts, Marshall is faced with enemies old and new all looking to make a name for themselves in this divided Chicago.
Marshall may want to level up, but first he’ll need to keep the bottom from falling out.
The war is over. Radiant Black Rebuild starts here.
And with issue 31, in addition to being back on time and monthly, we’re also bringing back our variant covers. The above cover is our A cover from Eduardo and Marcelo. Our B covers are also going to be open to order, and we’re doing something extra fun for these first six issues— Riccardo Robaldo will be handling all six covers, which will create one big interconnected image. Here’s the first one:
Finally, we’ll have a 1:25 foil C cover for each issue, with some pretty fun names joining. More on that in the coming weeks. Our first 1:25 foil cover is going to be this one by Marcelo Costa:
We’ve got big plans for Radiant Black now that the Catalyst War is finished and I can’t wait to tell you more about them in the coming weeks. February is going to be a big month!
Rogue Sun 24 and Beyond
The team has just put the finishing touches on Rogue Sun #24, which ends our fourth arc. Without spoiling anything (beyond what we’ve already shown at NYCC), Rogue Sun is lining up to have a big return in March. It all kicks off with Rogue Sun #25, out in March, and designed— like Radiant Black— to be a perfect jumping on point for the supernatural family superhero drama.
Which is also the perfect way to tee up what we revealed at our NYCC panel. Debuting in Rogue Sun #25, Dylan’s about to get some sibling rivalry.
We’re not quite ready to show the issue 25 cover— that’s next month— but don’t worry, “sibling rivalry” doesn’t mean Dylan is going anywhere. Quite the contrary—Aurie is a second Rogue Sun. But how is that possible? Is there a new sunstone? Who’s behind the new Rogue Sun?
And as Ryan, Nick and Abel have expertly done over the last twenty four issues, all of this is put through the lens of family. For Dylan, his hot-and-cold half sister— who thinks she should have been picked over Dylan in the first place— is now joining the fight, whether he wants her to or not. But what is she after? And how does it factor into Dylan’s planned war on Mourningstar?
We’ll have more about what’s coming for Rogue Sun and this new jumping on point next month but you can put it on your calendars— Rogue Sun Rises this March.
Moon Man vol. 1
One of the highlights of NYCC this year was getting to spend time with Marco Locati. We both joined Scott on the main stage along with Karina Manashil to talk about all things Moon Man including the super slick new volume one trade paperback. Well, those copies have also just shown up and once again, Michael has outdone himself.
The book is printed with spot gloss and a special fifth ink on the cover, to get that insanely vibrant orange. And it is, in fact, vibrant.
This goes on sale in comic stores on November 27! In book stores December 10th!
The Singularity Black Market Bookplate
One of the other fun events that Mat Groom participated in at NYCC was joining Bear McCreary, Ramon Perez and the one and only Rufus Wainright on the main stage to talk about musical world building and all things The Singularity, Bear’s huge heavy metal concept album + graphic novel. The response to the panel was overwhelming and unfortunately, we sold out of copies of the book! But, to try to make it up to fans who came by looking for a copy, we listed the book in our storefront along with a a special signed bookplate by Mat and myself.
We have some copies left and we’re making them available to everyone right here:
And speaking of some cool, special editions, Ryan Sidoti has fulfilled almost all orders of the Radiant Black: Black Market Massive Edition and he sent over this video to show how the books turned out. So sick!
Okay, that’s going to do it for me! Here are those NYCC photos!
Talk to everyone soon!
Kyle
Los Angeles
Hey Kyle! First off, I'm really excited for all the upcoming MV materials coming in the next few months (the No/One livestream and trade, Radiant Black and Rogue Sun returning with new arcs, etc). But I do have a question. On the Image lunar catalog the RB 31 cover has the tagline "Radiant Black Forever", yet the cover you show here is "Radiant Black Rebuild". Can you comment on which version of the A cover is going to be the final one when it releases in February?
